How to Make Fried Green Tomatoes
Step 1: Prepare Tomatoes and Dredging Stations
Slice the green tomatoes into ½-inch-thick rounds, discarding the ends. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. Place the flour on one plate. On another plate, combine the cornmeal, bread crumbs, salt, and black pepper.
Step 2: Coat the Tomatoes
Dip each tomato slice into the flour to coat completely. Next, dip it into the egg-milk mixture, then press it into the cornmeal mixture, ensuring an even, thorough coating.
Step 3: Fry the Tomatoes
Pour enough vegetable oil into a large skillet to create a ½-inch layer. Heat the oil over medium heat. Carefully place 4–5 coated tomato slices into the pan at a time, making sure not to overcrowd.
Step 4: Finish and Serve
Fry until golden brown on one side, then flip and cook the other side until evenly browned. Transfer the fried tomatoes to a paper towel–lined plate to drain any excess oil.
Serve immediately while warm and crispy — a true Southern classic that’s crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, and bursting with flavor.
