How to Make Hamburger and Potato Casserole
Step 1 – Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Step 2 – Cook the Beef and Onions
In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion until the meat is fully cooked and the onion is tender. Drain off any excess grease, then season with salt and pepper.
Step 3 – Mix the Creamy Sauce
In a separate bowl, whisk together the sour cream, milk, and condensed soup (either cream of mushroom or chicken) until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Step 4 – Layer the Casserole
In the prepared baking dish, begin layering as follows:
- A layer of thinly sliced potatoes
- A portion of the cooked beef mixture
- A layer of the creamy sauce
Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of potatoes topped with sauce.
Step 5 – Add Cheese and Bake
Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top. Add a dusting of paprika or herbs if desired. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil and continue baking for 20–30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
Step 6 – Cool and Serve
Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving. This helps it set, making it easier to slice and serve warm.
